About S.M.A.R.T
S.M.A.R.T, short for Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology, is a monitoring system designed for early error detection in flash storage devices like solid-state drives (SSDs). SSDs use NAND flash memory, which stores data by moving electrons. However, repeated write cycles can gradually degrade the NAND chips, limiting the lifespan of the drive.
The S.M.A.R.T system continuously evaluates the health and reliability of the SSD. It tracks metrics such as the number of write and rewrite cycles in various areas of the drive. By analyzing this data, S.M.A.R.T can predict how much useful life remains in the SSD, helping users plan for timely replacements. This proactive approach ensures data integrity and reduces the risk of unexpected drive failures in the future.
