Sulfur corrosion has become an increasingly critical concern in environments with high levels of atmospheric pollution and relative humidity. These conditions accelerate the degradation of electronic components, primarily due to the formation of silver sulfide. This corrosive byproduct forms when silver reacts with airborne sulfur, significantly increasing electrical resistance and potentially leading to open circuits in components such as chip resistors.

ANTI-SULFUR CHIP RESISTORS

 

Typical chip resistors typically use silver-based inner electrodes, which are highly vulnerable to sulfuration in high-sulfur environments. Over time, the buildup of silver sulfide can sever electrical conductivity, resulting in circuit failure. Anti-sulfur chip resistors and resistor arrays are engineered with specialized materials that inhibit the formation of silver sulfide, effectively preventing corrosion and maintaining long-term electrical reliability in harsh environments. These components are tested and certified to meet ASTM B809-95 standards, demonstrating resistance to sulfuration at 105°C for 750 hours anti-sulfur FOS testing.

EFFECTIVENESS OF ANTI-SULFUR CORROSION CAPACITY

 

DRAM modules and SSD equipped with anti-sulfur chip resistors and arrays, even without conformal coating, can withstand sulfur-rich environments for at least 600 hours (25 days). ISA Standard 71.04 defines the G2 level as a recognized benchmark for airborne contaminant severity in developed regions, particularly in data centers.
